1. Washington Gulch Engagement Photos

If you want classic mountain views, this is the spot. Washington Gulch gives you wide-open fields, rolling hills, and those iconic Crested Butte peaks. In summer, it’s draped in wildflowers. In fall, the hillsides glow gold. Evening light here is perfection — soft, warm, and romantic.


2. Slate River Engagement Photos

Dreamy riverbanks, bridges, and winding trails make this location beautiful for couples who want variety. It’s perfect for a barefoot-in-the-water moment or a cozy snuggle on the river rocks.

Crested Butte offers a variety of scenic locations with surrounding mountains wildflower meadows and aspen forest. Sunrise and sunset are popular times for couple photos. Getting up high into the mountains is best for sunrise and sunset photos. Locations include:

Getting up higher into the mountains is best for unobstructed views. Driving up Washington Gulch Road, Gothic Road or Slate River Road will get you up in elevation and farther away from crowds and obstructions. The CB campground is a popular location for its wildflower field and 360° Mountain views.

Are there spots safe for climbing or adventure photos?

Crested Butte is a perfect location for adventurous photos. Taylor Canyon is a very popular location for rock climbers. The upper loop has several bouldering locations and a beautiful aspen forest to hike through- perfect for climbing photos. There are many hiking trails with aspen and pine forests with spectacular views. The Green Lakes Trail is a long and strenuous hike to a beautiful green lake surrounded by the peaks of several mountains. Paddle boarding and kayaking are popular at Irwin Lake or down the Slate River.

Do sunsets or sunrises work better in summer vs fall?

Sunrise and sunset photos are beautiful at any time of the year in Crested Butte. In the summer, sunrise is at 5 AM and sunset is at 7 PM. In the fall sunrise can be as late as 6 AM and sunset is at 6 PM. In the winter sunrise is between 6:30am and 7:30 AM and sunset is between 3PM and 4:30 PM. Depending on how early you are willing to wake up and get to your location, the summer, fall or winter will offer different time frames and be best at different locations.

Crested Butte has many hiking trails that range in all levels of ability. Easy and scenic hiking trails include: the woods walk

  • Lower loop- great loop for beginners
  • Upper loop- great loop for beginners to intermediate
  • Rec Path- from town to Mt. Crested Butte base area
  • Judd Falls- easy walk to beautiful falls

More difficult scenic hikes include:

  • the Caves Trail- in Crested Butte South
  • Trail 401/403
  • Green Lake Trail – strenuous uphill
  • Upper Upper Loop – on Mt. Crested Butte

Where can we bring pets safely on trails?

All public trails are open to pets. Leashes are required within town limits. Great trails for dogs include the lower loop with its river access. the walk around Irwin Lake and the woods walk.
