Here is my personal Family Portrait Photography Guide: What to Wear to help you look your best at your next family photo shoot. If you are prepping for your first photoshoot you probably have a couple questions about what to expect. A common concern for people having their photos taken for the first time is what to wear.
What to Wear Guide Tip 1: Ask Yourself, What is The Purpose of this Shoot?
This should be your first thought when deciding what to wear. Choose an appropriate outfit for the occasion and something that suits your personality. If this is a holiday theme add props and dress accordingly. Matching some of the colors and staying away from clashing prints is extra important! But the most important thing to remember is comfort. If you are not comfortable in your outfit you won’t look comfortable. This is especially true for kids!
Tip 2: Keep Season & Location in Mind
Where is the photoshoot taking place? Choose an outfit that will keep you feeling comfortable and confident. For example, if you’re on a beach, those new high heels might not be the best choice and you might end up looking a bit out of place. For the Rocky Mountains of Crested Butte, flats or even closed-toed shoes are the best options, unless its snowing…then I would suggest snow boots! Talk to your professional photographer about the terrain you will be photographing in so you can plan!
What to Wear Tip 3: Mix and Match Clothing
Don’t be afraid to wear patterns or prints for your photoshoot but keep them to a minimum and try to pair them with solid colors that match. If you’re having a family photoshoot for example, have two family members in printed items and two in solid colors. Play with different colors to match the mood and setting of the shoot. But stay away from anything with text on it like logos- too distracting!
Tip 4: Make your Photos Timeless
You might love that trendy top or pair of pants now but will your photos stand the test of time if you wear that item of clothing? Basics that fit you well are your best friend. Stay away from clothing too loose as it will add pounds (like a moo-moo) but stick with some nice basics that will never go out of style like jeans and a white top with a colorful scarf.
What to Wear Tip 5: Makeup
This would depend on the type of photos you are taking. Fashion shoots will call for more dramatic makeup but for your everyday maternity, family or portrait shoots, keep your makeup natural and to a minimum, but don’t forget it! Make-up photographs well and helps highlight your features. Lips without a little color can look tiny and take away from your beautiful smile. So don’t be afraid to give everything a little boost with sone blush, mascara and colored lip gloss.
Tip 6: Fit is Important
If you already have an outfit in mind for your shoot, try it on before the session to make sure that it fits correctly and compliments your body type. Too loose and it will add too many lbs, too tight and it might feel uncomfortable (and show unwanted parts). This is true for both men and women- saggy pants or oversized shirts will not be your friend. And for the kids, stick to something simple and cute but most important comfortable and that you might not mind them getting some dirt on…
