Wondering what to wear for your family photo session? You’re not alone! One of the questions I hear most often from families is, “What should we wear for family photos?” Choosing the best family photo outfits for the whole family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be!
As a Crested Butte family photographer, my biggest advice is simple: comfort comes first! You want everyone to look their best, but you also want your kids to feel comfortable enough to move, play, explore, and be themselves.
In the video below, I’m sharing my favorite tips for choosing family photo outfits, including:
- Why comfortable clothing is so important
- How to dress young children for family photos
- Choosing colors that coordinate without matching
- The best colors for Colorado mountain family photos
- Why sensible shoes make a difference
- What clothing patterns, logos, and colors to avoid
- How to coordinate outfits for large family groups
What are the best colors for Colorado mountain family photos?
Some of my favorite colors for Colorado family photography include blues, whites, browns, maroons, and other natural neutrals. You can also incorporate pops of color to add personality and interest.
What kids should wear for outdoor family Photos?
Avoid itchy or restrictive clothing for toddlers to prevent discomfort and ensure they can move freely. If kids feel comfortable they will look comfortable in the photos. Sensible shoes allow kids to run and play on dirt paths and grass, creating natural candid moments.
What to wear for summer wildflower family photos?
Pick a cohesive color palette for the group, avoiding crazy neon colors, mixing too many patterns, logos and written words. Summer wildflower sessions are a great time for neutrals mixed with pops of color like blues, reds and maroons.
What to wear for fall aspen family photos?
Blues, reds, maroons, whites, browns, and blue jeans work well as great pops of color across any season, especially fall. The yellow aspens and snow-capped mountains are a perfect backdrop for blues, reds, and neutrals. Think cozy sweaters and darker colors.
What shoes work best for outdoor sessions?
Sturdy, sensible shoes are best for all participants of an outdoor family photo session. Sneakers, boots, flats and any options that are easy to walk in on dirt and rocky ground is best.
Should everyone match or coordinate?
It is nice to work within one color palette for everybody. If you have a very large group, you certainly want to discuss beforehand which colors are going to look best together so that everyone’s not like wearing crazy neon prints or contrasting patterns. No need to be matchy-matchy, just find a color that works for everyone and let each individual find something to wear that touches on that color palette.
What not to wear for family photos?
You want to stay away from logos or the written word on clothing as well as contrasting colors, bright colors like neon and too many patterns like stripes, plaids and designs.
